The Teepee tent take inspiration from the typical native American Indian wigman tent which was historically made with coverings of animal skins. They were a mainstay to some of the Great Plains tribes and were an important part of the nomadic lifestyle of those Native American cultures. Wigwams were used by other tribes and while shaped differently, were intended to be used as solid structures that could be packed up and moved easily when the time came to move to a different area.

The teepee tent’s actual origins are still a mystery. There are many cultures that have used conical shaped housing as
part of their shelter system for over ten thousand years. The Native American teepee as we know it is more shrouded in mystery because the teepee’s construction is solely out of natural materials that break down easily and quickly when left to the elements unchecked. A typical teepee of the Great Plains was made of a set of wooden poles wrapped either in animal skins or birch bark. Remember, the Native Americans had hardly hit the Bronze Age when Europeans came across for the first time. What made the teepee unique is that it is able to have a fire inside the shelter safely. The conical design and open top allow the smoke to get out without causing the occupants of the teepee to succumb to the smoke. In the harsh winters of the region where the teepee was utilized, there were liners that could be added that provided insulation. Between the fire and this insulation, even the worse snow storm became easily and comfortably survivable.

The teepee we know today stems from innovations that the Great Plains buffalo hunters made. They realized that they could tilt the cone of the teepee into the wind. This modification made the teepee stand up to the strong winds of the region better. It also increased the headroom and usable space inside by making one wall of the shelter nearly vertical. The other modification that these tribes made was that they moved the smoke hole from the top to the sloping side of the teepee. This allowed them to add flaps that could control the ventilation and fire inside the teepee better through the use of poles on the outside of the teepee.
The construction of the teepee as well as the decoration done to the outside is mired in symbolism. From the four main poles that begin the construction representing the four seasons to any colors or painting done that are used to represent the occupant’s dream quest to teepee ornaments that identified the occupants, the symbolism is always there. The teepee and wigwam that are used today are now made out of more modern materials. While the lodge poles are still made out of wood, most modern teepees are covered in cotton canvas rather than animal skins. This is done for cost purposes as well as longevity. It is far easier to maintain a canvas structure than one made of animal skin, especially in times of inclement weather.
Teepee tents these days are produced by well known, expert tent makers the best ones probably being made by Vango with the range know as the Vango Juno range of tent. These are prefect for camping trips and are really easy to set up with just one pole. I use my Vango Juno tent at festivals as just like the
